NIKE AND ASICS  RUNNING SHOE TEST
Thanks goes to Luke’s Locker, Dallas for help fitting Tester’s. (It is important to know if you are a “Neutral” runner, or how much you tend to pronate while running, in order to select the correct shoe.)

Tester Profile – Men - #1 = 5’10”, 280 lbs.,  #2 = 5’11”, 183 lbs., #3= 5’ 10”, 163. Tester Profile – Women - #4= 5’1”, 110 lbs.

Men’s Asics tested:  Gel-Fortitude, Gel-Nimbus, Gel-Speedstar, Gel-Landreth3 Women’s Asics tested:  GT-2120

Men’s Nike tested:  Structure Triax+10, Air Pegasus Women’s Nike tested:  Air Zone Elite 3

Indoor Gym setting. Tester’s agreed:  “Running” shoes in a gym environment is best.  If you plan on doing any running, on a T60, the CT1, or the Gym track, always buy running shoes, even if the majority of your exercise is spent on other equipment.  With good “Running” shoes you will avoid shin splints and other running ailments, plus Tester’s agreed, all shoes worked excellent on the E70, CR1, CB1, V620, R40-S, R70, Velocity, Momentum, FE10, FB10, and the Abcore Jr.  Even more reason to buy a “Running” shoe when exercising on many types of equipment.

Tester #4
Asics GT-2120
“These shoes are light weight and felt solid on all the machines. They give very good support, but a little ‘rigid’ on the T60, were comfortable on the E70, and excellent on the R70.

Nike Air Zoom Elite
“Slightly heavier than the Asics, but have good balance. Feels like it has a little more cushion then the 2120’s, absorbs impact well, the more I run on the T60 or CT1, the more I like these shoes. These feel great on the R70, but on the E70 and other ellipticals, my feet begin moving slightly forward in these shoes and I had toe pinch.”

Question
If you were to buy one pair for yourself, which one would you prefer? “Both are excellent shoes, and if not for the ‘toe pinch’ when using the E70 with the Nike Air Zoom Elite, the Nike would be my choice, but since I run and do other forms of exercise at the Gym, I would buy the Asics GT 2120.”

Asics Gel-Nimbus 9
“This shoe required some ‘break in time’, felt a little constricting on outer/upper. At faster speeds, this ‘feeling’ became less.  At a fast walk, shoe is excellent on the T60, comfortable while running. Using on the E70, felt more comfortable than while running. Overall, foot support is very good, and I found shoe comfortable to use while moving from one exercise to another. Would have no qualms using this shoe to run on treadmills or outside.

Asics-Fortitude 2
“Excellent support from heel to toe, very outstanding shoe for running on either the T60 or CT1. From the treadmills to the E70, Velocity, FB10, to working out on the Abcore Jr., the Gel-Fortitude is a running shoe that I will continue to put to use.  I will never use anything but a ‘running’ shoe for Gym workouts again.

Question
If you were to buy one pair for yourself, which one would you prefer? “The Asics Gel-Fortitude 2.  It gave me the best support from heel to toe, and was very comfortable on every piece of equipment.”

Tester #2
 Asics Gel-Speedstar II
“Running 30+ minutes on the T60, Great feel, very good motion control while on the treadmill. Transition from treadmill to R70, E70, Velocity, Fitstar FE10, even Abcore Jr., shoe is very comfortable and fits well on all pieces.  68 minutes on the Velocity, the Speedstar felt much lighter then my standard bike shoes, (there is no pedal clip, but I can not use my bike shoes for running or any other workout either.), almost felt barefooted, cushioning in doing hill work is great.  Since only the Forefoot of the feet are used on the E70, I found this shoe handled itself quite well, keeping traction where my foot did not slide forwards or backwards.  The trick to any shoe is that it feels like it is not there, and your feet are not screaming at you.  A very good shoe.”

Nike Triax 10
“This shoe feels heavier than the Speedstar, you notice the weight. In both biking and run tests, shoe is very stable and firm.  A hard 30 minutes on the Velocity the ‘heaviness’ keeps your foot in the cage while doing high rpms and hills. 20 minutes on the E70, then 10 on the Momentum, transition was smooth, shoes are great for motion control. 30 minutes on the CT1, the shoes felt great, very stable during exercise on the treadmill.  45 total minutes, running on the T60, then E70, R40-S, and ending on the Momentum.  Moving from piece to piece shoes worked very well. 15 minutes on the CR1, 15 minutes on the T60, finishing with 5 minutes on the FE 10, shoes stayed stable and firm.”

Question
If you were to buy one pair for yourself, which one would you prefer? “Either shoe will serve the runner well, but the lightness and comfort feel of the Asics Gel-Speedstar II would be my personal choice.”

Tester #3
Nike Air Pegasus
Day 1, after warm-up on the V620, ran on the T60, from the get go, the shoe felt “Stiffer” on the outside center then is my preference. Moving to the CR1, then the E70, and finishing on the Abcore Jr., these shoes worked great.  I will never use anything but running shoes in a Gym setting again. Day 2, warm-up on the V620, ran on the T60, the shoe did not have the ‘Stiff’ feel, must have broke in after day 1. Shoe was less noticeable on my feet while on the T60, liked them a little better. Transition to the CR1, and E70, shoe still worked great. Day 3, Warm-up on the V620, then the T60, to the E70, then CR1, 30 reps on the Abcore Jr., and cool down on the V620.  Shoe still has ‘Stiff” feel while running, although not uncomfortable, it was noticed. Shoe still was excellent on all the other pieces. Day 4, Warm-up on the V620, a 20 minute run on the T60, 10 minutes on the CR1, 25 reps on the Abcore Jr., and a cool down on the V620. Was tired this day so did not work out as long or as hard. Day 5, Warm-up on the V620, ran on the CT1, then moved to the E70, finished on the Abcore Jr.  Shoe very comfortable, still stiffer then I prefer, but worked great on the other equipment.                -

Asics Gel-Landreth 3
Day 1, Warm-up on the V620, ran on the T60, shoe felt very comfortable on the treadmill from beginning to end of run, had a lighter feel than the Pegasus, did not bother me when using the E70 and CR1, but the Pegasus had a better feel on the elliptical and recumbent. Finished with 50 reps on the Abcore Jr. Day 2, Warm-up on the V620, ran on the T60, then moved to the R70.  Running characteristics changed little from day 1, which was a good thing.  50 reps on the Abcore Jr. and finishing on the V620 for the day. Feet felt good.  Excellent shoes. Day 3, Warm-up on the V620, ran on the CT1, little change on shoe comfort from day 1. Workouts on CR1, FE 10, Abcore Jr., then cool down on the V620. Shoes feel great on all pieces. Day 4, Warm-up on the V620, ran on the CT1, shoes still very comfortable on treadmill, used CR1, Abcore Jr., finished on V620.  Again I say, buy a good running shoe for the Gym, no cross trainers, etc., if you do any running, treadmill or track at your Gym, your feet, shins, ankles, will thank you.

Question
If you were to buy one pair for yourself, which one would you prefer? “I would buy the Asics Gel-Landreth 3, because from when I put them on they were comfortable to run in and use.  The Nike Pegasus is also a good shoe, but I had to ‘break’ them in. Using the Nike on the other equipment besides the treadmill, the Nike I liked better.  If I was concerned with price, then the Nike would be the choice as they were $29 less.”
